But was it racism?

The Summit HOA published the following statement on its website : STATEMENT FROM BOARD OF DIRECTORS The behavior and conduct of Mr. Pentland is not condoned by The Summit Community and in-fact strongly condemned by the Board, and members of this community. He does not represent this multi-cultural and multi-racial community. His behavior is not in line with this communities values and will be dealt with appropriately by local law enforcement. The Summit has no recourse into actions against Mr. Pentland, but have been informed by local law enforcement and Ft. Jackson authorities that this issue is as high a priority as it is with this community and we are confident that it will be resolved and dealt with appropriately by those agencies. There is racism in every community in every city, state, county, and country. We must always expose it and speak out against it wherever it rears its ugly head. We thank the community for bringing this to our attention and giving it the exposure it ...

HOA Board and Office Contact Information gone from website

Last week I noticed that all the contact information for the HOA Board of Directors had been removed from the HOA website .  Previously, the email address for each board member was shown as a link from his name. That's gone. Board member names are shown in The Summit Scoop but there is no email address or phone number. Board member names are still shown on the website but the links containing email addresses have been deleted. Under the "CONTACT US" tab on the website appears this message: " Contact Us is not setup . " So you can't even find the phone number or the HOA address on the website now. So I emailed Justin Martin the following message:  "When you have time, will you please look at the CONTACT US page on the HOA website? Right now it reads "Contact Us is not setup [sic]." If you think contact information would be helpful to residents, will you direct the staff to provide it on that page?" He replied:  "It's down for a r...

The sign is gone

Sometime yesterday the HOA picked up the Black Voices Matter sign off "their" property in the Lakes of Barony Place. It took a while, but they must have finally accepted that the vacant wedge of property at what would be 202 Barony Place Circle, if it had an address, really is their property. And it turns out that it's not just a wedge of property fronting on Barony Place Drive. This morning I found the right page of Richland County Real Property records online for that parcel, and it turns out that the deed for the parcel was recorded on October 12, 2018, transferring the deed to The Summit Association from Lakes at Barony Development. Blogger won't allow an upload of a .pdf. If you are interested in viewing the plat, go to Richland County Property Tax Records search and use the field (far right) labeled "Property Tax Map Number". Enter this Tax Map Number:  R231076-10-10 Why there was all the run-around about their "contacting the owner", I'...

HOA: "No signs" - Really?

Image
Last Wednesday's protest drew over 150 people to the 100-200 block of Barony Place Drive, which is in the Lakes of Barony Place, next door to Barony Place I. On Thursday morning, this sign was brought to the neighborhood and placed on the small, undeveloped parcel next to 204 Barony Place Drive. I quickly asked the HOA to have it removed.  On Friday morning the office said they'd have someone check it out. On Friday at 6:15PM I was informed that "arrangements" had been made to have it removed on Monday or Tuesday. At the end of the day today (Monday) it was still there. WHY? Either D R Horton owns that small parcel (too small for a house) or it has already been deeded to the HOA. Either way, the sign should have been removed on Friday! Unless ... there are cowards at the HOA or D R Horton who are afraid to ruffle some feathers among the protesters.  Will the sign really be removed on Tuesday?

Blogger widget to be "canceled"

The Blogger.com hosting website for this blog will be canceling the FollowByEmail widget in mid-July. Beginning then you will no longer to notified when new postings are made here. Please check here frequently to follow news about the Barony Place Neighborhood of The Summit HOA. This includes Barony Place I and Barony Place II, but not the Lakes at Barony Place (contrary to the opinion of one Alternate). I've lived here for more than three years and the Neighborhood Representative/Voting Member has never published any type of neighborhood newsletter.

Protest - NOT peaceful

The protest at 199 Barony Place Drive was anything but peaceful on Wednesday, April 14. There were about 150 angry black men and women who showed up with signs and t-shirts.  Several pointed out that the t-shirts read BLACK VOTERS MATTER, not Black Lives Matter. And how proud of that they were. But I didn't see any voting lines or polling places. Or voter registration desks. They were there to display their feelings about an incident involving a white man and a young black man (not a juvenile, according to Sheriff Lott) that has received widespread attention in the media - even national attention. No need to re-hash it here. In response to my email to the HOA Board, one board member replied, in part, " but your email will only add fuel to the fire, as it gives a perception that you condone Mr. Pentlands behaviors. " I responded to him that that is an insult and, if he wants to know my position of Pentland's behaviors, he can ask me. Oh, and I also learned that the ter...

Selection of new Director and Treasurer

Did the Board of Directors call a special (or irregular pre-board) meeting last week to discuss appointing a seventh board member, to replace the late George Reynolds? Last week I submitted a request to the HOA office for the Zoom link to any special or pre-board meeting, and the office did not have the courtesy of replying.  Did the office ignore me at the direction of the President of the HOA, Justin Martin? He (and George) previously had informed me that I was no longer welcome at board meetings, despite a notice in The Summit Scoop every month that "Board meetings are open to ALL [ sic ] Summit residents." I sent a second request late Friday afternoon, as I had not been informed of any board meeting held last week.  Be sure to attend the April 13, 2021 re-scheduled April Board of Directors meeting. Request the Zoom link by emailing the HOA manager, Angela Adelman, at AAdleman@camsmgt.com    Send your request by early Tuesday morning, so that she will have time to...

HOA Treasurer passes away

Long-time treasurer of The Summit HOA, George Reynolds, passed away yesterday.  The office announced that today's Board meeting has been postponed until Tuesday, April 13, 6:30PM. Reynolds ruled the Finance Committee and was thought by some to be the de facto president of the HOA. He was also in charge of the Voting Members, although the actual case is that the Voting Members are supposed to be in charge of themselves. Neighborhoods were allowed to skip the annual meetings that are required in the By-Laws and did not elect Neighborhood Committees, from which the Voting Member and two Alternates were to be selected. That should change with the Board's appointment of a new board member to replace Reynolds, election of a new Treasurer and appointment of a new board member to guide the Voting Members, who are also known as Neighborhood Representatives. The By-Laws dictate how a board member is chosen to replace George on the board and how a new Treasurer is elected. Article...
