How Safe is The Summit?

How safe is The Summit?

If you pay attention to the monthly report published by the Richland County Sheriff's Department, you'll get one idea. You can find reports on the Summit HOA website. Under the Home tab, click on Public Service Announcements. Today (8/9/2021) the most recent monthly report is for December 1-31, 2020. (That's called 'Keeping your Members informed; right?')

If you listen to the report of the Safety Committee of The Summit HOA at a monthly meeting, you'll get another.

If you listen to the report of the CAT officer (of RCSD), you'll hear another.

Here's a source for you. Check out www.CrimeGrade.org for 29229. Simply click right here for fast access. See all that Red for The Summit? Green would be much better.

Car break-ins are a major problem. They can be stopped. Just pay attention to people roaming in your neighborhood day or night. You might want to form a Neighborhood Watch committee. Or a team of volunteers to drive around in the middle of the night. They would be observers, not vigilantes. They would call RCSD (not call the CAT officer) when they spot kids roaming through neighborhoods at 3:00AM.

If you follow www.NextDoor.com, you'll read stories about people who left computers, phones, wallets, even a Bible, in their cars, and thieves stole them. Some people still don't even lock their cars. Don't leave firearms in vehicles!

I guess it's reasonable to hope that, if someone opens your unlocked car door in the middle of the night and finds nothing of value, they'll do no damage and move on down the street. If they do, consider yourself very lucky.

Remember that the trunks of most cars can be accessed from a lever near the driver's seat, so any valuables out-of-sight in the trunk may disappear.

Clean out your garages and park two cars inside.

Could more be done in The Summit to change Red to Green on www.CrimeGrade.org? You bet!
